Anti-Ragging Cell

Ragging is totally banned in the campus and anyone found guilty of ragging and/or abetting ragging is liable to be punished as it is a criminal offence.

Ragging is a criminal offence as per the Karnataka Educational Act 1983 and the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India. NEW HORIZON COLLEGE, KASTURINAGAR ensures strict compliance on the prevention of Ragging in any form.

Objectives of Anti-Ragging Cell

  • To create the awareness among the students of dehumanizing effects of ragging inherent in its perversity.
  • To keep a continuous watch and vigilance over ragging so as to prevent its occurrence and recurrence.
  • To promptly and stringently deal with the incident of ragging brought to our notice.
  • To generate an atmosphere of discipline by sending a clear message that no act of ragging in college campus.
  • To encourage students to report incidents of ragging without fear of retaliation by ensuring confidentiality and protection to complainants
  • To promote healthy interaction and mutual respect among students, fostering a culture of empathy, inclusiveness, and responsible behavior.
  • To ensure strict compliance with UGC and statutory anti-ragging guidelines through regular awareness programs, orientations, and monitoring activities.

 

Anti-Ragging Measures

  • Government/University Grants Commission (UGC), guidelines notified vide no.F.1-16/2009 (CPP-II) dated 21-10-2009 on Curbing the Menace of Ragging in Higher Educational Institutions, 2009 (Under Section 26(1) (g) of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956) are strictly implemented at New Horizon College, Kasturinagar.
  • In addition to the above, those students who indulge in the acts of ragging shall attract the punishments as applicable, which include any one or combination thereof
  • Expulsion from the Institution/ Suspension from the classes
  • Fine with a public apology
  • Withholding of scholarship or other benefits extended to those involved in ragging
  • Debarring from representation in cultural or sports events, or any other representation in events for which the student(s) may have been selected
  • No placement assistance to students found guilty of ragging.
  • Filing of a complaint by the affected student with the Police Authority (as per the Supreme Court’s Directive).
  • The Institution will punish or reprimand the student in guilt, either by itself or by following procedures, administrative or otherwise, by constituting a special Enquiry Committee and put forth its findings or recommendations before the competent authority to take a decision.
  • Students are encouraged to report any ragging act witnessed or experienced by them to the Principal, Student counsellor, Faculty, Student Affairs and Grievances Committee or other any staff member with whom the student may feel comfortable. The Institution ensures the confidentiality of such a disclosure by the student.

Grievance Redressal Cell

The Grievance Redressal Cell is constituted to provide a mechanism for redressal of students’ grievances and to ensure transparency in admissions and the prevention of unfair practices. The primary function of the cell is to look into complaints lodged by students and judge their merit. The Grievance Redressal Cell is also empowered to look into matters of harassment.

Objective

The objective of the Grievance Redressal Cell is to develop a responsive and accountable attitude among all stakeholders in order to maintain a harmonious educational atmosphere in the institution.

Grievance Redressal Cell – Objectives

  • To uphold the dignity of the College by ensuring a strife-free atmosphere through promoting cordial student–student and student–teacher relationships.
  • To encourage students to express their grievances and problems freely and frankly, without any fear of being victimized.
  • To provide a Suggestion / Complaint Box installed in front of the Principal’s cabin for students who wish to remain anonymous to submit grievances and suggestions for improving academics and administration.
  • To advise students to respect the rights and dignity of one another and show utmost restraint and patience whenever any situation of conflict arises.
  • To advise students to refrain from inciting other students against fellow students, teachers, or the College administration.
  • To advise all staff members to be affectionate towards students and not behave in a vindictive manner towards any student for any reason.
  • To strictly prohibit ragging in any form within and outside the institution and ensure that any violation of ragging or disciplinary rules is immediately brought to the notice of the Principal.

 

Scope of the Grievance Redressal Cell

The Grievance Redressal Cell shall deal with grievances received in writing from students relating to the following matters:

  • Academic Matters: Issues related to the timely issue of duplicate mark sheets, Transfer Certificates, Conduct Certificates, or other examination-related matters.
  • Financial Matters: Issues related to dues and payments for various items from the library, office, or other departments.
  • Other Matters: Issues related to sanitation, infrastructure, victimization by teachers, or any other student-related concerns.

 

Functions of the Grievance Redressal Cell

  • The grievances submitted by students shall be attended to promptly upon receipt.
  • The Grievance Redressal Cell shall formally review all cases and act accordingly as per the Management policy.
  • The Cell shall strive to provide an appropriate solution to the grievance within three working days.

Prevention Of Sexual Harassment (POSH) Cell

A Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) Committee has been established by the college to provide a healthy, safe, and respectful atmosphere for all students and employees of the institution.

The Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) Committee deals with issues relating to sexual harassment and is constituted to prevent sexual assault, rape, and other related offences, particularly against girl students and women employees on campus.

Objectives of Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) Cell

  • To ensure a safe working and teaching environment for women employees and girl students in the campus.
  • To handle women-related issues with sensitivity, confidentiality, and fairness.
  • To ensure justice to women employees and girl students within the organization.
  • To prevent and resolve incidents pertaining to sexual harassment of women and girls.
  • To provide a trustworthy and confidential platform for listening to complaints and redressal of grievances.
  • To create awareness among students, faculty, and staff regarding prevention of sexual harassment.

 

Sexual Harassment – Definition and Scope

  • Sexual harassment includes any unwelcome sexually determined behavior (whether directly or by implication).
  • Verbal or physical threats.
  • Insulting, abusive, embarrassing, or patronizing behavior or comments.
  • Offensive gestures, language, rumors, gossip, or jokes.
  • Humiliating, intimidating, demeaning, or persistent criticism and open hostility.
  • Suggestive comments or inappropriate body language.
  • Isolation or exclusion from normal work or study environment.
  • Displaying, circulating, or publishing pornographic, racist, sexually suggestive, or otherwise offensive material.
  • Eve-teasing, unsavoury remarks, and gender-based insults or sexist remarks.
  • Unwelcome sexual overtones through telephone calls or other communication.
  • Touching, brushing against any part of the body, or any unwelcome physical contact.
  • Forcible physical touch, molestation, or physical confinement against one’s will.
  • Any act likely to violate a woman’s dignity or privacy.

 

Roles and Responsibilities of the POSH Cell Members

  • To create awareness among faculty, staff, and students regarding rules against sexual harassment of women.
  • To listen to grievances of women faculty members and girl students, if any.
  • To verify complaints received within a stipulated time frame.
  • To take appropriate disciplinary action including reprimands, suspension, or termination as per rules.

 

Complaint Procedure

  • Any woman member who feels that she has been harassed may approach the Members or the Chairperson directly.
  • Students may report their grievance to the Class Coordinators, who shall forward the complaint to the POSH Cell members.
  • Confidentiality of the complainant shall be strictly maintained.

 

Discipline

  • Any member found guilty of sexual harassment shall be subject to appropriate disciplinary action, including reprimands, suspension, or termination of membership as per institutional rules.


Complaint and Redressal Mechanism

  • On receipt of a complaint, the matter shall be discussed by the POSH Cell and an appropriate solution shall be arrived at within one week.
  • If the issue is not resolved at this stage, a formal meeting shall be convened for further discussion.
  • The complainant may be summoned before the committee, if required.
  • After hearing the complaint, the committee shall deliberate and take a decision based on majority consensus.

Placement Cell

It is noteworthy that education and employment share an interdependent relationship, individually and synergistically producing desirable outcomes such as the acquisition of academic competence and the development of skills and expertise required to become socially productive citizens.

From the student perspective, high-quality placements bring a wide range of benefits and positive impacts. There is strong evidence to suggest that placements and work experience are extremely valuable to students, both in terms of academic performance and employability skills.

The Placement Cell at SMC plays a crucial role in identifying and securing job opportunities for undergraduate students by maintaining continuous interaction with reputed firms and industrial establishments.

The Placement Cell operates throughout the year to facilitate interaction between companies and graduating students. The number of students placed through campus interviews has been steadily increasing. Many reputed organizations visit the institute regularly to conduct placement training programmes and campus interviews.

The institution has successfully maintained high placement statistics over the years, and the consistent placement success of students even during challenging economic periods stands as a testimony to the quality of education and training provided.

The Placement Cell organizes career guidance programmes for students starting from the first year. HR managers and industry experts from various organizations are invited to conduct training sessions for final-year students.

Companies such as TATA Consultancy Services, Hyundai, Connect, Madhu Infotech, Dyna, and Wipro visit the college regularly for placement training programmes and campus interviews.

Students of SMC have also been placed in several prestigious organizations including PwC, Infosys, JSW, Ernst & Young, Deloitte, HSBC, Jaro Education, O&B, TIAA, The Crimson Circle, Big Basket, Accenture, Tata Motors, and many more.

Music, Art & Culture (MAC)

Shree Medha Degree College believes that artistic and cultural activities are essential components of a healthy and vibrant learning environment. The Music, Art & Culture (MAC) Cell promotes integrity, creativity, and cultural awareness among students of Shree Medha. It plays a vital role in reviving the nation’s history, heritage, and traditions. The institution envisions a campus community rich in cultural values, which not only creates awareness of traditions and customs but also updates and strengthens students’ knowledge of Indian cultural heritage.

Need for MAC Committee

The MAC Committee aims to create an atmosphere that is intellectually and aesthetically stimulating for the campus community. The activities conducted by the committee are informal in nature and are designed to sensitize the academic community to diverse dimensions of human experience and knowledge.

These initiatives help enrich students’ lives, make them aware of their social responsibilities, and enable them to understand the implications of their actions in society.

Objectives

  • To inculcate a sense of belongingness among students.
  • To promote teamwork, coordination, and amicable relationships.

 

Responsibilities of the Cultural Committee

  • To be responsible for organizing all intra-college and inter-college cultural events.
  • To plan and schedule cultural activities for the academic year.
  • To organize cultural fests and talent showcases.
  • To organize and celebrate national and traditional festivals.
  • To arrange other cultural events on campus after regular class hours.

Bridge Courses

Bridge Courses are institutionalized as a regular feature of the academic programmes of the institution. These courses aim to provide students with the necessary understanding and self-confidence required to face academic challenges and smoothly transition into their respective programmes. Bridge Courses are institutionalized as a regular feature of the academic programmes of the institution.

These courses are designed to equip students with the foundational knowledge, academic orientation, and self-confidence required to meet the challenges of higher education. By addressing gaps in prior learning and familiarizing students with the curriculum, teaching methodologies, and evaluation processes.

Standards for the Course

  • Each department shall conduct a Bridge Course programme for its students.
  • Departments shall plan Bridge Courses in accordance with their respective curriculum requirements.
  • The duration of the Bridge Course shall not exceed one week and shall be conducted during the first week of every academic year.
  • Each Bridge Course must have clearly defined objectives, syllabus, and evaluation criteria.
  • Bridge Courses may be conducted in the form of orientation programmes, syllabus-oriented classes, examinations, exposure visits, or interactive sessions to promote an active learning environment for students.
  • Each department shall conduct ice-breaking sessions to create a friendly atmosphere where students can freely share their strengths and weaknesses without inhibition.
  • Bridge Courses shall provide adequate learning opportunities for students to transition from one academic level to another through interaction with subject teachers.
  • Bridge Courses shall help students adapt to new social and academic environments through interactive sessions.

 

Remedial Coaching Cell

Shree Medha Degree College is well known for its strong teaching–learning process, which helps students build a solid foundation of conceptual clarity. The Remedial Coaching Cell focuses on supporting academically weaker students and enabling them to improve their academic performance.

Objectives

  • To assist scholastically backward students in excelling in their academic pursuits.
  • To provide focused academic support to weaker students by encouraging guided self-study under the supervision of subject lecturers.
  • To prepare and provide simplified study materials and notes for better understanding.
  • To take extra measures to clarify doubts and guide students for improved academic preparation.

 

Responsibilities

  • The Head of the Institution is responsible for the effective implementation of the Remedial Coaching Policy.
  • All Heads of Departments (HODs) shall communicate the programme guidelines to the respective Programme Coordinators.
  • Each Programme Coordinator shall be responsible for the effective implementation of the programme.
  • The programme may be modified based on regular feedback received from stakeholders.
  • Programme Coordinators shall ensure proper documentation and submit reports to the concerned authorities.

SC/ST Cell

Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) are recognized as some of the most socially, economically, and educationally disadvantaged groups in Indian society. These communities include various castes, races, and tribes that have historically faced marginalization. The SC/ST Cell has been established to support students from these communities and to help bring them into the academic and social mainstream.

The SC/ST Cell of the college works towards empowering SC/ST students by creating a supportive and inclusive learning environment. The institution takes special interest in facilitating financial assistance to eligible students from government agencies and other sources. Students are also encouraged to enroll in career orientation and skill development programmes that equip them with the necessary competencies to make informed career choices.

Objectives

  • To counsel and guide SC/ST students and help them manage academic and personal challenges effectively.
  • To ensure a safe, secure, and inclusive environment for all SC/ST students.
  • To provide prompt counselling support during emotional or psychological emergencies arising from campus-related issues.
  • To establish a mechanism for the redressal of grievances of SC/ST students.
  • To ensure protection and reservation benefits as provided under the Constitution of India.
  • To arrange special opportunities to enhance career growth and employability.
  • To create awareness among SC/ST students about various scholarship programmes offered by the State Government and the University Grants Commission (UGC).

 

Activities

  • To collect information and reports related to State Government and UGC orders concerning education and employment opportunities for SC/ST and OBC students.
  • To circulate notifications and updates regarding State Government and UGC scholarship schemes.
  • To communicate regularly with students and motivate them towards effective academic planning and a better future.

ELC (Electoral Literacy Club)

Electoral Literacy Clubs (ELCs) promote electoral literacy among Indian citizens of all age groups through engaging, interactive activities and hands-on experiences in an apolitical, neutral, and non-partisan manner.

The club aims to create awareness about democratic processes and responsible citizenship. All students from all semesters of the institution are members of the Electoral Literacy Club.

Objectives

  • To educate the target population about voter registration, the electoral process, and related matters through hands-on experiences.
  • To facilitate familiarization with Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) systems, and to educate students about the robustness of EVMs and the integrity of the electoral process.
  • To help students understand the value of their vote and encourage them to exercise their right to franchise in a confident, comfortable, and ethical manner.
  • To harness the potential of ELC members to spread electoral literacy within the community.
  • To facilitate voter registration for eligible members who are not yet registered.
